About this deal

This thing sounds seriously good for a budget earphone but you might need another cable to get the most performance out of it. There is definitely good control to the Bass and Sub has a more impactful response than the Mid-Bass, Sub-Bass has a nice rumble to it but is a little on the slow side. However, BLON did not get it right with their first dual-driver IEM, esp since dual-dynamic setups are hard to pull off. They attempted to create a slogan using words that’s first letters spelled BLON but it comes out as largely non-sensical and somewhat bemusing.

In terms of tuning they are quite different, as they offer much less sub-bass but much faster bass, less present (and warmer) mids and more present treble. There’s not a lot to say about the shells of the BLON BL-03, as the exterior design is very simplistic. The packaging is what you would have come to expect from WGZBLON minus the famous and cryptic writing of the past. Imaging is better on the BL-03, as far as I can tell, though not by a large margin and that’s surprising. It is not very sparkling, not too extended nor the most refined and clear sounding but detail retrieval is not missing. It certainly has not made writing this review any easier, especially when I’ve been seeing people so confidently predicting that I’d rank these in the B ranks or even up in A! The BL-03 does have enough energy to not feel enclosed and does have some air but sparkle is a bit limited to say the least.

The thin, non-detachable cable may also be a turn-off for some, and finally, they are not suitable for trebleheads. They have some well-received IEMs in their bullet-shaped E series line-up, with gems such as the E500, E1000, E2000, E4000, E5000, and today’s E3000. Fit is good as size is fairly small but nozzle depth is fairly shallow in the ear canal and tip selection is critical to getting good performance from the BL-03.It’s not an absolute con by itself considering again, very few IEMs actually get my thumbs-up in these qualities. The pair features a powerful combination of a 10mm carbon diaphragm dynamic driver and a 6mm lightweight micro dynamic driver with a precise electronic crossover to ensure a high-quality output with low distortion and high clarity.

Mids: Midrange is forward, has warmth but can be natural and pleasant with vocals sounding clear on most types of music. In particular ‘bass bloat’ is a term that has been thrown around regarding the BL-03, and I think it is entirely justified. There are rumours that this was tuned by the same guy who tuned the Oxygen, but nothing has been officially confirmed. It reaches the deepest frequencies with enough volume for them to be perfectly audible, and the fact that the volume decreases after them instead of increasing as usual makes them especially noticeable. This characteristic offers a sense of sluggishness that weakens the whole, being less agile to follow fast bass lines, as their power exceeds the dynamism needed to pick up in due time. Thankfully the nozzle is extended and they come with longer than the usual ear tips so I was able to get a proper fit with a tight seal that helped with noise attenuation. While the Blon BL-03 has a somewhat similar tuning, with a bit more sub-bass and less upper midrange and treble, they also have worse detail, worse layering and worse instrument separation. At best, the BL-03 seems best defined as small theatre or impromptu concert where you are within a few rows of the instruments.
