About this deal

I adored A Wizard of Earthsea, which I read and reread until my ratty old paperback copy required emergency surgery.

The books, first published in the late 1960’s, are written in a simple, free-flowing style and I quickly fell under their charm. Ged faces many battles during his life but it is the battle within himself that stands out in the book. With stories as perennial and universally beloved as The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of The Rings—but also unlike anything but themselves—this edition is perfect for those new to the world of Earthsea, as well as those who are well-acquainted with its enchanting magic: to know Earthsea is to love it. Le Guin originally intended for A Wizard of Earthsea to be a standalone novel, but she wrote The Tombs of Atuan as a sequel after considering the loose ends in the first book; The Farthest Shore followed after further consideration.

The shadow is getting closer and closer to him, and he must discern it's true name or else he will not be able to defeat it. Lieke from The Netherlands My father read this book when he was 17, now I am reading it and I love it! It is a realm of shadow and dust, of eternal night where the stars are fixed in the sky, and nothing changes.

Earthsea - Wikipedia

A skilled thief, his mercenary partner, and a world of high fantasy… What is the World of Elan series about? I read this series in high school (due largely in part to a very open minded and liberal english teacher), and continue to enjoy it today some 15 years later. Beginning with A Wizard of Earthsea (1968), The Tombs of Atuan, (1970) and The Farthest Shore (1972), the series was continued in Tehanu (1990), and Tales from Earthsea and The Other Wind (both 2001). The real world, as most of us know (if not all presidents and prime ministers), is rarely so monochromatic, and neither is Earthsea. I still have the phrase 'as far away as Selidor' stuck in my head along with other phrases, it is so eloquent! And that opened my doors and windows to imagining other societies, other planets … different futures, and so on. Any reader with experience of adolescence will recognise herself, or himself, in Ged’s portrait, and because we identify with Ged’s failings, we worry for him, can hardly bear to look when disaster hits, and afterwards care deeply about his fate. Sent to the School of Wizards on Roke, he learns the true way of magic and proves himself a powerful magician.

Tenar has since embraced the simple pleasures of an ordinary life, while Ged mourns the powers lost to him through no choice of his own.

The Earthsea Quartet - Ursula K. Le Guin - Google Books

The series as a whole is known as the Earthsea Cycle, and was published in a single volume in 2018 as The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition, with art by Charles Vess. In A Wizard of Earthsea, published in 1968, Ursula K Le Guin created one of literature’s most fully formed fantasy worlds. From this incident, Ged and Ogion learn that he has become too powerful at too young an age and is not able to control the magic within. Although this novel, and the entire quartet, have been classified as children's books, I do not totally agree with the label or classification.Consequently, A Wizard of Earthsea reads like the retelling of a tale first told centuries ago, and whose twists and turns have been handed down through generations of storytellers.
