About this deal

This award-winning book has everything Ibbotson’s stories are best known for: an epic journey into the unknown, memorable characters, and a fantastic setting.

Invaluable also for topic work on rainforests, South America or rivers this book will be thoroughly and deservedly welcomed in KS2 classes everywhere. With their warmth and humour, magical characters and heaps of adventure, Eva Ibbotson’s books are loved by children and adults alike. She has a fascination with wildlife having lived in a home that sheltered zoo animals in the war; the opportunity arises for her to go to South America with Yara a supposed hunter of rare animals and in this case The Giant Sloth and so begins the adventure. Rosa is a very engaging young girl, whose hopeful nature has kept her optimistic about being reunited with her mother and sister, and whose love of animals has sustained her during her loneliness.Along with the story of Rosa's friendships, first with Billy, then with Yara's family that, until she gets on a boat to Panama with Yara, she has never met, is the story of her parents and where they are, no one has heard from anyone from the time Rosa arrived in 1938. Along with the children comes a rather more unusual set of evacuees – the residents of a nearby zoo. I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! The central character, Rosa, escaped from Vienna (a nice link to Ibbotson’s birthplace) on the Kindertransport and spent the war years at the dilapidated West Country mansion house owned by Sir Clovis and Lady Prue, surrounded by the girls from an evacuated London school and the animals from the local zoo. You definitely don't need to have read Journey to the River Sea to read this book, but it would fill in Maia's story.

I was very grateful to be granted access to the eARC by NetGalley, you can read my full review here: http://vsviewfromthebookshelves. However, Maia, who Miss Minton eventually plans to take with her, does not know this and believes that she has been abandoned. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do.

You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. Fabulous setting, adventure, mild peril, happy endings for those who deserve them, punishment for those that don't. As Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, a deputy mayor of Jerusalem, said of the evictions of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah district of East Jerusalem, a spark for the recent war, “laws that some people may consider as favouring Jews” are necessary because “it’s a Jewish state” and only discriminatory laws can “protect the Jewish people”. Writing a sequel to a much-loved book that has deservedly achieved ‘classic’ status is no mean feat, but Emma Carroll has risen to the task masterfully.

Eva attended the prestigious Dartington Hall School, before studying Physiology at Cambridge University. Then again, we can smell the jungle warmth, alongside lingering in the friendship and adventure that seems to offer Rosa so much.I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. Then again, it might be the welcome given by Yara’s twin sister and brother, Vita and Enzo, their teacher, Minty, and their mother, Maia….

What an honour Emma Carroll had to continue Eva Ibbotson's legacy, and she ABSOLUTELY did it justice.Clovis, also an orphan, desperately wants to go back to England, while Finn wants to stay in Brazil. It does impress upon you the awful number of displaced adults and children that war creates and that just disappear, never. Yara turns out to be on a secret mission to locate nazis and the story ends with rosa being reunited with her mother and sister after many long years apart. As this develops we discover different monsters which prove far more dangerous, involving ratlines, escaping Nazis etc.
