About this deal

This beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition of If Only They Could Talk features an afterword by Yorkshire Shepherdess and author Amanda Owen. I remember watching in the 1980s some little tidbits of the British TV series 'All Creatures Great and Small', which is based on this book (and later ones as well). If only they could talk” is the first of many books that follow the same historical line in James Herriot’s life. James Herriot's books were televised in the enormously popular series All Creatures Great and Small. Ja esi sirdī dzīvnieku mīlis, šī grāmata ir jāizlasa- humors savijoties ar ikdienas skarbumu pavērs durvju šķirbiņu uz 30.

One of the more subtle differences, which didn’t really fit into the table, is in the nuances of character of some of the main protagonists. This series centers around James Herriot, young Veterinarian, who juts got a job with Siegfried Farnon, who owns a practice. Because the previous book I read ('The Choice') was a bit on the heavy side emotional wise, I wanted a lighter read and found this first book in this series (6 books or even more followed) among my nature books on my bookshelves. In the book, James Herriot has many strong characteristics which help him through his tough, and demanding, career. The resulting book, titled All Creatures Great and Small, was an overnight success, spawning numerous sequels, movies, and a successful television adaptation.

His reminiscences as a surgeon are pleasantly mild and warm to read and his style of narration that describe his adventures with the animals and their owners is of the most hilarious form that can make even the most serious of the reader burst out in a laugh. Later on a secretary is introduced, who helps to add even more tension… but all ends well, or at least, James Herriot lives to tell the tale of his first year! Siegfried was really angry with Tristan for what had happened and he sent him to look for the animals all over the town.

Many of the stories are only loosely based on real events or people, and thus can be considered primarily fiction. That man in the picture had just finished an excellent lunch and had moved next door to do a bit of calving just for the sheer pleasure of it, as a kind of dessert. In this chapter, Herriot affronts a difficult case of a reversion of uterus in a cow and he takes Tristan with him in case he needed extra help with the case. Tristan has a more positive attitude to the pigs than in the series, being interested in their individual characters.

In the very first chapter we initially meet Herriot while he is performing a calving right in the middle of a winter night, drenched in sweat, blood, snow and mud, and wondering about the situation he is in when compared to the squeaky clean picture of a veterinary surgeon performing a calving that was provided in his obstetrics book while training. Tristan comes back and forth with several excuses for not opening the haematoma before he finally does it. God this book made me laugh hard, sob, it made me put it down and take some time away, it was really hard to read in places but a great read, a great insight to being a vet in the countryside. The Herriot books are often described as "animal stories" (Wight himself was known to refer to them as his "little cat-and-dog stories"), and given that they are about the life of a country veterinarian, animals certainly play a significant role in most of the stories.
