About this deal

It seems that a millennium of regal headwear reached its majestic conclusion with that astrological ping-pong ball. Half a century on, the design-conscious king is now preparing for the most momentous ceremony of his life. It met a sticky end in 1649, though, following the execution of Charles I during the English civil war, when the House of Commons voted to melt down the “toys and trifles” of the monarchy. Unlike the old stamps featuring the silhouette of Queen Elizabeth II where she faced left, Charles is turned to the right in the new set.

It will likely take longer for coins to be fully replaced, with many not set to enter circulation until mid-2024. Give your head the royal treatment and create this regal Tudor Crown Craft for the King's coronation! The 20-year-old prince was crowned against the dramatic medieval backdrop of Caernarfon Castle, beneath a swooping perspex canopy, designed so cameras could get a good view of the action, while guests sat on modern red-stained bentwood chairs, adding a bit of Technicolor pop to the scene. Whilst your children are crafting away, why not entertain them further with these 7 King Charles III Facts to Share? When the original imperial crown was destroyed in 1649, it was valued at five times that of St Edward’s because of all its jewels – and the 1937 recreation doesn’t hold back. The crown was designed by Louis Osman, an architect and goldsmith described by one of his friends as “the original hippie” – and it marked a radical departure from the usual staid royal headwear. Other stamp topics scheduled before the sad passing of the Queen include:Christmas 2022 and Tutankhamun. With just that scant record to go on, the 17th-century crown that will be used this weekend is a florid fantasy of what that melted crown might have been, conjured by royal jeweller Robert Vyner with a liberal dollop of artistic licence.

First stamps to bear King Charles’s silhouette to be released

Notes and coins bearing the Queen’s portrait will only be removed from circulation when they become worn or damaged.Photograph: Royal Mail/PA The stamps mark a significant milestone in British philatelic history as they are the first change of silhouette since 1968. Unlike Queen Elizabeth II’s famous silhouette, the King is not depicted wearing a laurel wreath, the late Queen’s silhouette has been featured on special stamps since 1966. Charles’s uncrowned profile, in silver and facing to the right in the top left hand corner, appears on a collection of 10 special stamps celebrating the nation’s favourite flowers.

The other flowers in the first class set are a purple iris, a pink lily, a fuchsia, an orange-red tulip, a dark pink peony, a bright orange nasturtium, a pale pink rose and a light purple-tinted dahlia.

An updated design by David Gentleman was used from 1968, adapted from Mary Gillick’s original cameo portrait of the monarch used on coins. When Charles was crowned Prince of Wales, he didn’t know he was wearing a table tennis ball on his head. Anne Jessopp, chief executive officer of the Royal Mint, said: “We are honoured to have struck each UK coin of her Late Majesty’s reign, documenting her journey from young Queen to respected head of state. When King Charles was invested as the Prince of Wales in 1969, the young royal went through all the pomp and ceremony unaware that the jazzy modern crown he wore on his head was topped with a ping-pong ball. The stamps also mark a significant milestone in British philatelic history as they are the first change of silhouette since 1968.
