About this deal

Although in essence Beowulf and the tales are considered legendary rather than fact, historians generally accept the characters described by the poem are based upon genuine 6th Century Scandinavian royalty and warriors - and the Anglo-Saxons and subsequent 8th/9th Century Viking raids upon Britain form part of the History National Curriculum at KS2; thus this book supports cross-curricular learning too. Beowulf, a prince of Geatland, hears of the Danes’ suffering and gains permission from his king to sail to their assistance. I enjoyed reading something different and a different style of writing, it’s just not my favourite genre.I missed the real message of the story of Beowulf in high school because I was so lost in the language. The Anglo-Saxon story of Beowulf is told in three short animations, covering his battles with the monster Grendel and Grendel's mother. They go on to create a number of varied written outcomes using the text as a starting point including recounts, formal letters, dialogue, descriptions, obituaries and writing their own epic, heroic narrative using various poetic devices. It uses different dialects of Old English for the spelling and has many different linguistic styles. The language itself is a joy to read aloud and Morpugo captured the spirit of the tale of Beowulf beautifully and in a way that was appreciated by my wide range of listeners.
