The latter device is similar, but features a lower-end camera, and may be worth considering if you’re looking for a phone just for the basics. This is classic Nokia, which has for years been the primary proponent of “naked Android” initiatives such as Android Go and Android One. There’s a poor 2-megapixel macro camera and a basic depth sensor for background-blurred portrait pictures. The phone just doesn’t offer the peak brightness required to deliver respectable clarity in high levels of ambient light.

Other than the lack of protection from the elements, the only major downside is the chunky bezel underneath the screen, with an accompanying U-shaped hole-punch notch at the top. These are people who want a fairly affordable Android for the basics, which demands little upkeep and is fairly easy to use. Honestly, I’m shocked that Nokia is okay with how this screen looks, and it’s a serious downside from what should have otherwise been the star of the show.Brightness is so-so at 393cd/m², but the phone’s lack of contrast makes reading the screen in bright sunlight pretty much impossible. You also get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which is a bit measly but can at least be expanded further via microSD. That being said, I don’t think the Nokia G21’s cameras can do enough to outweigh the phone’s long list of negatives. The case is made from Upgraded double-sided cold-carved tempered glass which is drop-proof, explosion proof and has no need to stick phone film. Display color is slightly weak, too, although may not prove off-putting if you like a laidback appearance.

Its side-mounted fingerprint scanner is reliable, and while a beat off the speed of a mid-range Android, it kind of matches the tempo of the phone in general. Long battery life and stripped-back software are a good fit for people looking for a no-nonsense, low-upkeep Android device, but the Nokia G21 is beaten in other areas by rivals from Realme and Xiaomi. This entry-level SoC is only used in cheap phones such as the Samsung Galaxy A03 and the step-down Nokia G11.Text and image outlines don’t look as crisp as they should, with jagged edges making things generally hard to read. It’s a fairly cheap phone, although you can save even more by dropping down to the Nokia G11, which is similar –but comes with a weaker camera. In the Geekbench 5 single- and multicore tests, the Nokia G21 scored 311 and 1,190, which is about on a par with the Moto G31, but trails slightly behind the Nokia 5.

It isn’t particularly loud; in fact, it sounds rather thin, and obviously delivers a poorer sound field than a stereo pair. Yes, the design is rather nice and the clean Android installation is always a positive, but the phone’s so-so performance and weak battery life don’t help the Nokia G21 pull away from the competition. Sure, the first thing you’ll notice is that it’s made of plastic, but the construction is solid, with a textured rear panel and flat sides to ensure the phone fits nicely in one hand. The outer surface of the protective shell adopts a textured design and a non-slip and scratch-resistant material design which does not fade. The case is made of high quality TPU material that is flexible, thin and lightweight silicone for an exact fit of the phone.Its speaker is weak and mono, the GPU doesn’t hold up well with the most demanding titles, and you can’t play Fortnite at all – at the time of review. That’s fine for overnight charging, but quick top-ups won’t be possible unless you get hold of a more powerful charger. The case is made of an environmentally friendly silicone and hard PC surface and has a built-in kickstand.
