She is of course beautiful and young (all the women seem to be in their early 30s) and is repeating the action of wiping a counter and picking up a glass over and over.Joanna is a member of the National Organization for Women, and she’s used to spending time with likeminded feminists. Every other house in Stepford is spotlessly clean, even though there seem to be no domestic servants; the wives cheerfully do the housework themselves. In the movie, she goes to the therapist and makes the Disneyland comment, but that’s as far as it goes.And rather than reducing women to drudges, it elevates them to flawless goddesses – on the surface, anyway. She runs but is tracked down by the members of the Men’s Association, and she is taken to Bobbie’s house.

The men still win, but Joanna at least gets to bash her husband in the head with a poker in this version. But it’s also Levin’s novel, in which those repulsive, boring guys are, after all, smarter than their wives. However, another woman new to the neighborhood contacts Joanna and they become friends and talk about how odd all the other women are. Ira Levin’s novel The Stepford Wives was published in 1972, several years after Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique in 1963 and founded the grassroots activist group National Organization for Women.
