About this deal

It was heart-warming to see that due to certain events, things start to thaw and all three women start to open up and allow the others in. It’s summertime in the glorious Salcombe, and Liz is having both of her goddaughters - Clare and Skye, stay for the summer.

But the idea had been sewn, and after the sedation wore off, I began scribbling my notes from my hospital bed, wondering to myself just how iron-clad a surgeon’s oath is, and what it would take to break it. With Clare and Ivy staying for the summer and no love lost between Clare and Skye, it could cause more problems than it solves.

Skye and Clare are step sisters who have not always had the best kind of relationship, but these three ladies are thrown together over a summer in Salcombe, hoping to understand each other and build bridges together again. It was a Eureka moment for me: the novel would tell the couple’s love story in this wonderful place, and explain how they ended up in space with only ninety minutes of air remaining. The Idea of You is the story of a woman’s quest to become a mother later in life and what happens when her dream of motherhood seems to be slipping through her fingers in a race against time. Liz runs a catering company in Salcombe, but following the death of her business partner and best friend Jen, she has rather fall out of love with the business.

Liz, Jen and Mike's relationships, Claire and Adam and Skye in Africa all added such depth to the characters and made them feel completely relatable. She’s not shy about exploring issues like illness, alcoholism and war, but ultimately her stories are about relationships, about people, about love. Perhaps because I didn't connect with any of the characters I found myself picking up on things I might have overlooked had I been more invested in their stories. It is set in 1960’s London and I loved spending time in that era, plus it takes place in my Nan’s house so it feels familiar.I always knew what would happen to Lexi and whilst her journey is tough and heart wrenching, I also wanted it to be a story about hope and the unity of a perfectly flawed, close, average family. I think the best compliment I can ever have is when a reader says they felt my book was like holding a mirror to their own life.

Liz has been lost since the loss of her best friend/business partner, Jen, and has been struggling to get the motivation to get through each day without a drink. It's our mission to cultivate connections through shared experiences, celebrating each other's successes and providing encouragement through challenges. Cathy is the author of the best-selling romantic comedies Ivy Lane, Appleby farm, The Lemon Tree Cafe and A Vintage Summer. I wrote the novel late at night for more than two years, and the book was published by Penguin Random House in 2017; now Hold Back the Stars has been translated into 22 languages around the world and is being adapted for film by the producers of Stranger Things and Arrival, with director Justin Baldoni attached to direct.I read voraciously as a child, but the book that left me stunned and wishing that one day, I might be able to make someone feel the same way with a story, was Colleen McCullough’s the Thornbirds. I agreed and set to thinking about it, deciding right away I wanted the story to be narrated by Archie Christie’s mistress.

Reading a Cathy Bramley novel is like having a chat with your best friend over a glass of wine and a great big slice of your favourite cake and The Sunrise Sisterhood is definitely no exception. The Promoter reserves the right to publish entries (including parts of entries) although publication does not necessarily mean the entrant has won a prize. Lovely to have her love life as a background story and not thrust into your face as something that is an 'issue'. I didn’t fully understand the nature of the illness or the impact it has on families until I started speaking to sufferers. And I thought, what if Archie Christie’s mistress were a little enchanted by the wife whose life she was tearing apart? And that’s great news for the reader, who is kept thoroughly entertained by the captivating storytelling. The conflicts are creative, moving the action along on a jagged path to understanding and realisations. I loved the multi-generational element of the three main characters, all dealing with very relatable issues and each strong in their own way.
