It’s wonderful to have a small, protective box for just the deck, separate from the “big box” that includes the book. But saying all this, this is like going into a forest filled with beauty and saying that two leaves were not your favorites.

The only colors in the card are the orange and red of the flame, the colors of primal and instinctive energy. The story of The Wild Unknown begins in New York City, with an artist creating the 78 tarot card illustrations at her drafting table using ink and watercolor. Oh and of course the court cards and how each fits into their respective families and how each family is tied to an element and how this can interact with factors in your life. The centre reminds me of a pupil but the centre is white instead of black and the ring around it is dark, where the livings are.Perhaps this level of adrenaline is necessary for now, but as mentioned above, the energy of this card is not always sustainable. Before I do though, let me just say that there is something about holding and working with this deck that feels very different to just looking at the images as they appear on the screen.

This butterfly appears tranquil and free, but the dark heap of wands at the bottom of the card show she has earned this experience by going through the thick of life. I just know that this deck has a voice like no other and everything I ever disliked in supposed nature-based decks is absent in this deck. Even tiny details like the weight of the ribbons and the interior printing of the box have been thought through and perfected.The card box sits in a well, atop a long textured ribbon, which is folded to help the user lift out first the guidebook, then the box of cards.

Along with husband and collaborator Arjan Miranda, Kim curates The Wild Unknown, an arts collective offering publications, artwork, music, and events that activate the forces of creativity and radical transformation. Her Wild Unknown guidebook is also an extraordinary cult art object—a hand-lettered and fully illustrated primer that leads readers through shuffling and cutting the tarot, creating spreads, and interpretations of all seventy-eight individual cards. It wasn’t until the Waite-Smith tarot deck came around that the numbering was switched to Strength as 8, Justice as 11.Experiencing the full range of sensual pleasure available to us on this planet is another mode of connecting to the divine, and the Empress reminds us that sensuality can be just as sacred as prayer or contemplation. And now I will always associate The Fool with a foot and my interpretations will include that understanding.
