About this deal

It helps to have everything organized, so maybe build some compartments into the box, or bag things up. Some mention that it's easy to learn and fairly quick to set up, while others say that it can be difficult at times, and the different quests demand different strategies. There’s also the fact that the game adds pressure to the players by making them get behind on their use of actions. In spite of the fact that it has a decent amount of board game style strategic meat on its bones it really feels like a stripped down role-playing session: each turn the heroes move and the dungeon unfurls slowly before them as they draw tiles from a stack and add them to the board.

One thing I haven't mentioned yet is that each character can pick four or five powers unique to them, and while suggested combinations are offered, there's actually about twice as many to choose from, providing lots of opportunity for exploring different approaches to different scenarios. There are strategies the group can use, as mentioned above, but the whole group has to stick to them and even then things can change rapidly. There is no "basic attack" - but you have two at-wills so you can usually attack in some way if you want. We played with four players (the game can accommodate up to 5 and there is no GM), and ended up playing 4 scenarios which took about 5 hours total.

In Castle Ravenloft up to five players take on the roles of either the ranger, wizard, rogue, cleric or fighter, then descend into one of the 13 adventures pitting players against a random progressively generated dungeon working together to either destroy a villain, find a relic or any number of other goals as indicated in each adventure. The first is that this quite possibly does the best job ever of capturing the spirit of those old-fashioned role-playing game dungeon crawls that were so much fun in the days of my youth. The light rules weight and the well-known nature of the license also leaves ample scope for both official and fan-generated extra content to be squeezed in. It was pure luck, I was surrounded by monsters but an Event card threw me to the furthest point of the dungeon away from everyone.

After that, people often spend their Hero phase dealing with the monsters activated by the previous player's turn. Evil lurks in the towers and dungeons of Castle Ravenloft, and only heroes of exceptional bravery can survive the horrors within. The game was so much fun that we immediately decided that we needed to play again using a different scenario. The active hero (that is, the person whose turn it is) can either attack and move, move and attack, or move twice. Yeah, sounds like they prioritized actually finishing the licensed ones to me by giving up on the other ones (and asking for additional money). Some attacks only work against adjacent creatures, some against any creature on your tile, and some against creatures one or more tiles away.
