Those rock art inscriptions harbor many secrets yet to be unraveled, at least some of them likely related—it seems—to poetry associated with the Bedouin oral tradition. Islamic poetry, and notably Sufi poetry, has been written in many languages including Urdu and Turkish. In this volume we have gathered many of the most celebrated of these ancient and classical verses by poets of the caliber and brilliance of Rumi, Kabir, Hafiz and many others. in Urdu written by poets have expressed their gratitude in English, Urdu and Roman languages for readers. Professor Joel Hayward's deep wisdom and thought are beautifully reflected in these lines of poetry.

When the Qur’an (the divinely-inspired word of God) appeared, how much it resembled or owed to the pre-Islamic poetry (the work of poets and soothsayers— kahin in Arabic) preceding it became a hot-topic issue. With so much territory to cover in this overview, we have opted to divide our survey into three parts: the first, beginning here, discusses pre-Islamic poetry starting with the oral traditions of Bedouin Arabs prior to Islam and continues into the first “true” Arabic poetry dating from the 4th century CE; the second, to follow in October, centers on what is known as the classical period and explores verse inspired by Islam and the Qur’an; the third, concluding this series in November, reviews modern Arabic poetry, continuing the story into the present day.The job of the rawi was to learn the poems by heart and to recite them with explanations and probably often with embellishments.

Current Muslim poets in English include Rafey Habib, Joel Hayward, Dawud Wharnsby, and the late Daniel Moore. That poetry was rooted in the oral tradition of the desert with all of its richness, passed on from generation to generation for untold centuries by tribal story-tellers. Tawhid, Unity in its deepest sense, is the first principle of Religion, which impels the Sufis to claim that all, everything, is He. This time period caused tension amongst the early Islamic world, since the ode style of writing was seen as profane to the sacred text of the Quran. Rumi did not reject Islamic law; but he did, like al-Ghazali before him, begin to criticise some jurists (fuqaha) for seeing nothing in religion but strict observance of ritual.
