Riis’ photograph depicts the bend of Mulberry Street in New York’s Chinatown where Lee grew up blissfully unaware of white people and the struggles of previous immigrant groups.

At lunchtime, we would go out to eat at the Brown Derby, Musso, and Franks, or some other local restaurant, and I got to observe all the activity that was occurring on Hollywood Boulevard.

Photography gradually consumed Lee, and when it came time for grad school in 1974, he jumped in with both feet, matriculating at Yale under the tutelage of Walker Evans—“as a teacher, indifferent at best,” by Lee’s reckoning—whom he later came to print for.

White strolled into lectures barefoot and encouraged his often bemused technology students to heighten their awareness of the creative process by practising meditation and reading Zen Buddhist texts. Four years ago, Barney Kulok of Hunter Point Press happened to be in New Orleans and saw several of my prints in the Ogden Museum. The vagueness of the process of being anointed as significant has made me compare my work to wine where perhaps my photographs have become better with age. During the spring term of his first year, he took a 2000-mile road trip from Tennessee through Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Georgia, exploring his new surroundings.
