Land is a major theme in the novel such that the fields themselves are elevated to an almost sacred level, with the apogee of success and happiness in the eyes of the novel’s characters being to own at least a small piece of the farmland. I read that Reymont undertook this project because he wasn't satisfied with Emile Zola's study of peasant life reflected in the Rougon-Macquart novel, Earth. That intrigued me as an admirer of some of Zola's other novels. I also read that some critics feel The Peasants needs a new translation into English: the most recent dates from 1924. I distinctly noted some pronounced similarity to Zola's style, but Reymont's prose is much more poetic when describing his characters' environment, especially the weather. a b Michalak, Ada (30 June 2023). Born into an impoverished noble family, Reymont was educated to become a master tailor, but instead worked as a gateman at a railway station and then as an actor in a troupe. His intensive travels and voyages encouraged him to publish short stories, with notions of literary realism. Reymont's first successful and widely praised novel was The Promised Land from 1899, which brought attention to the bewildering social inequalities, poverty, conflictive multiculturalism and labour exploitation in the industrial city of Łódź (Lodz). The aim of the novel was to extensively emphasize the consequences of extreme industrialization and how it affects society as a whole. In 1900, Reymont was severely injured in a railway accident, which halted his writing career until 1904 when he published the first part of Chłopi. While being crude, superstitious and largely oblivious of the world outside their village, Lipce’s peasants are also imbued with noble qualities and a naive innocence that arouses sympathy and respect from the reader. Significantly, the (genderless) narratorial voice comes from within the community, no doubt reflecting the fact that Reymont himself grew up in a village. Contrary to what might be expected, given that Polish society at the time was predominantly rural, there are few comparable Polish works: Bolesław Prus’ The Outpost (1885–1886), Eliza Orzeszkowa’s The Boor (1888) or Maria Dąbrowska’s Folk from Yonder (1926), all of which have themes in common with The Peasants, have an external, more objectivised narrative perspective.We’re combining, live, CGI and 2D animation with oil painting animation.
