About this deal

Blu-ray: English, Italian, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, Icelandic, Norwegian, Spanish. It surprisingly adds a character arc that was unexpected during my first watch, but with each repeated visit, it is impressive to see how it continuously pays off throughout the course of the story. Working from a script written, in part, by Christopher McQuarrie ( The Usual Suspects), Liman doesn’t ever confuse the lines of chronology, only occasionally flirting with the uncanny by skipping past unnecessary “life lessons. The wide-angle shots of Paris at night, during the incursion in the finale, look terrific, as the deep, interstitial blacks and various stages of light show off the spot-on application of HDR.

The on-disc extras are as they were – mostly EPK fluff but there is some solid stuff in the extended Liman interview. No one knows WHY, they just are here, and we’re doing our best to keep ourselves alive as they slaughter us in the millions. The contrast really helps add to the definition and depth, while also showcasing more fine details, textures and patterns. He will indeed have his day and in the last decade alone he’s had it across a huge range of genres and sub-genres and delivered a near staggering array of entertaining genre flicks including, but not limited to, deep breath, The Final Girls, Happy Death Day (and its sequel), Boss Level, Palm Springs, Koko-di Koko-da, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things… the list is, well frankly Endless (sorry). Surrounds are light and airy, dancing around the sound stage and allowing the listener to just get sucked in.

This means that the presentation here on this 4K disc is an upscaled 3840 x 2160p resolution image with its original aspect ratio of 2. Low Frequency Extension: Explosions, smashing, punches, gunfire, engines, laser blasts and more really have the subwoofer pounding and shaking the room. At startup, the disc goes straight to a static main menu screen with the usual options along the bottom and music playing in the background.

While some may feel that it’s inappropriate to alter previous audio or video elements, I think we have to consider if those changes are damaging to the original intent. From unique environmental additions to ambiance to recognizing what is off screen to effecting rolling travel, this one really packs a nice wallop. All disc reviews at High-Def Digest are completed using the best consumer HD home theater products currently on the market.

Warner’s new disc ports over the modest extras from the earlier Blu-ray, of which the only noteworthy feature is a 43-minute production documentary that chiefly focuses on director Doug Liman and how he organized the shoot, from meticulously working with the art department to avoiding potential snags. This draws out both large and small sound elements and allows their directional correlation based upon the onscreen events to be readily definable. Europe's busiest forums, with independent news and expert reviews, for TVs, Home Cinema, Hi-Fi, Movies, Gaming, Tech and more. Killed within minutes, Cage is thrown into a time loop, forced to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again and again.

A race of aliens has landed in central Europe and quickly decimated all defenses, owing to their seemingly preternatural ability to anticipate all military forces’ next moves. It turns out that Rita was exactly like Cage back at Verdan, which explains why she was able to singlehandedly take out the Mimic defenses (LOOOOOOOOOOTS of practice). This is a stylized film and its two very different “worlds” exhibited excellent depth and dimension.

However, Cage’s fighting skills improve with each encore, bringing him and a comrade (Emily Blunt) ever closer to defeating the aliens. Again, a quick comparison to the previous disc confirming a much better rendering of those previously impenetrable blacks that also now seem to have much more weight behind them due to better gradation of the shadows that the HDR grade helps produce. If any enticement was needed to revisit this minor classic of action/sci-fi cinema eight years on, this edition is a great way of doing so….

Doug Liman’s sci-fi exercise into the plot device that gets referred to by a movie it was made popular by in Groundhog Day, is a complete success in its fun, suspense, character and excitement. It’s located just slightly in front of the left/right speakers within the acoustic space it occupies within the soundstage. We reviewed this Region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release on a JVC-DLA N5 Ultra HD 4K projector and a Panasonic DP-UB9000 Dolby Vision/HDR10 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

However, there are a few instances of very mild aliasing along the sharpest edges of several objects, such as Cage's name badge during his first meeting with General Brigham and along the roofs of caravans later on. It’s obviously disappointing that there’s nothing new added here, but not expected with the current slew of 4K re-releases.
