About this deal

I loved the relationship between Val (the vampire) and Elly (the young hunter [lower case h] with her on the book cover). They could have hated each other, they could have killed each other. But they each found something appealing in the other and worked together because they had to. I would have expected them to be catty or hurt each other but they both adapted. Only, she wasn’t feeling any relief. Elly looked out a window into the night. Somewhere out there, the Creeps were coming. A day, maybe two, and they’d find her here. They wouldn’t be kind to anyone aiding her. This children’s book was written by Laura Marsh, an author who has published over 20 books as an author and editor, including several for the National Geographic Readers series. Night Owls uses a dialogue technique from time to time that just didn’t work for me. At times, the characters will use sentence fragments where ellipses or commas seemed more appropriate. I ended up saying the dialogue in my head to see if I was missing some special emphasis but came to the conclusion that I wasn’t. There is also some slang that I don’t think is common day slang but also seemed odd to be newly created. Though perhaps I’m just not hip ;-).

When you’re searching for a book about owls, keep the following criterion in mind: author expertise, illustrations, and research. I’m going to say it right now, The Anatomical Shape of a Heart is going to be on my top ten book list at the end of the year. One aspect that I am very excited to learn more about is the connection between Elly and Cavale. They were raised as siblings even though they aren't by blood. They were trained to fight and some of their magic was on display here, but I want to know more about them. I want to know just what they can do and how powerful they truly are. It seems like they each have their specialties, but I wonder what else they can do. I also want to know more about the mystery behind Elly's parents. No spoilers, but I see her parentage playing a big part in the next book. Earth to Beatrix. This was the night bus, not a Journey song. Two strangers were not on a midnight train going anywhere." As well as a need for greater awareness of the importance of sleep, there are too many myths circulating around it. Among these is the idea that there’s a simple solution to night owls’ struggles: they should cut down on caffeine, practise better sleep hygiene, be more disciplined – and even rely on medication. The Barn Owls tells the story of a group of owls who call an abandoned barn their home and how they survive and thrive there. Owls He had large boy hands, all sinewy and latticed with faint blue veins, and long, slender fingers. More beautiful bones. I desperately wanted to trace my fingers over them—which was insane. And stupid.” The Enigma of the Owl: An Illustrated Natural History byMike Unwin(Author),David Tipling(Photographer),Tony Angell(Foreword) Did you know that nesting habits differ from owl species to species? Or that they rip right through the flesh of their prey while stabbing it to death with their sharp beak? Gail Gibbons taps into things we don’t know about an owl’s nocturnal lifestyle in this nonfiction picture book. The author covers their habitat, birth and development, the threats and predators they face, and their diet. More specifically, this book dives into how different species of owls differ from one another via detailed illustrations and appealing infographics for children. We’re brainwashed to believe that early birds are happier, more successful, more disciplined and all-round better human beings than night owls. The hours when I feel most alive are considered ‘ungodly’ and likened to a vampire’s schedule. Owls like myself internalise this message, and we believe we must be lazy, depressed and irresponsible.”

In case you didn’t know (shame on you), Jenn Bennett is one of my favorite authors. I first discovered her books a couple of years ago and have been an avid fangirl ever since. She writes romance spectacularly well and happy endings that leave me more than satisfied. When I found out that The Anatomical Shape of a Heart would be her first foray into young adult, I couldn’t have been more ecstatic. I have a huge soft spot for young adult contemporary romance, so of course I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this. I also hope that the book’s (probable) popularity will spark interest in her adult books, which have great crossover appeal for older readers and basically deserve all the praise. Have you ever wanted to throw a book because the damn characters wouldn't grow up and deal with the big problems instead of focusing on their less important personal ones? I have--plenty of times. But not with Night Owls. It was everything I want when it comes to character interaction. Dead,” she said, and the weight of the last two nights crashed down on her at last. She tried taking a deep breath, but it turned into a sob. Another followed, then another. All she could see were Father Value’s eyes, cold and staring–the only part of his face she could even recognize under the blood and bruises.

I’m sorry,” she said after a while. She wrangled hold of the sadness and fear coursing through her and gave Helen a watery smile. Opening Sentence: Father Value had taught Elly everything she knew about living to see another day. Night Owls is fun. It manages to hit that balance that keeps all the dark, heavy scenes and all their impact – while still keeping a lightness that is fun which is really really hard to do. Usually one or other has to be sacrificed
